The Gomes Name

The Gomes name has been associated with the construction industry since 1936. First as A Gomes Transport then, in 1969 as Gomes Transport (Pty) Ltd and subsequently as Gomes Sand cc from 1995.

Our premises are situated in Laezonia and Hartebeespoort Dam where customers can collect sand and stone. We cater for all truck types, and at Laezonia we have a modern weighbridge system.

Our Fleet

The business operates a modern fleet of tipper trucks, servicing the north-western areas of Johannesburg, west of Centurion, south-west of Pretoria and South East of Hartebeespoort Dam.

History Timeline

Gomes Sand 1936

The Gomes name has been known in the construction industry since 1936. Trading as A Gomes Transport, sand was quarried and sifted by hand.

Gomes Sand 1969

A property was bought in Hartbeespoort Dam, where plaster sand was dug out and loaded on the trucks by hand. The company subsequently changed its name to Gomes Transport (Pty) Ltd.

Gomes SAND 1976

The first front-end loader was put on site in Hartbeespoort Dam.

Gomes SAND 1979

A Volvo N88 tipper truck that had been scrapped years before, was rebuilt by 19 year old Gerardus Gomes. With this he started sub-contracting for other quarries as well as buying and selling sand where he could.

Gomes Sand 1981

A brand new Mercedes horse and trailer was purchased for R118,000.00. This was the second truck to be bought that year, the first being a new MAN horse, along with a new CAT 920 front-end loader.

Gomes Sand 1983

The company not only dealt in sand and stone supplying, but often conducted rubble removing and earthworks jobs.

Brand new CAT 930 front-end Loader was purchased.

Gerardus Gomes pictured operating a CAT 930 front-end loader whilst building a static screen. The static screen was built to sift building sand, it was fed by 3 CAT 930 front-end loader each with 1.3 buckets.

Gomes Sand 1986

A power screen was bought to sift building sand in Olifantsfontein, with this came increased production.

Gomes Sand 1988

The quarrying operation was moved to Laezonia.

Gomes Quarries

Gomes Sand 1992

A sand washing plant was put up to produce riversand. Prior to this riversand was produced by washing the sand in a concrete mixer, which had an extremely limited production capacity.

Gomes Sand 1995

Sand washing plant was built at Hartebeesport Dam site to wash plaster sand under the name Gomes Sand cc.

Gomes Sand 1996

First crushing plant was built at Laezonia quarry and a drill and blast pit was developed. The plant was set up to produce aggregate, crusher sand and G1 products. The plant was built in 2 phases and it wouldn’t be until 1998 when the plant was completed.

Gomes Sand 2006

Gomes operation moved to land adjacent to its pervious Laezonia based quarry and started trading under the Gomes Sand cc name. The company conducted sand reclamation from construction sites using mobile screens.

Crushing plant was put up at the Hartebeesport Dam quarry to produce aggregates and washed plaster sand.

Gomes Sand 2006

Since 2006 Gomes Sand has developed a quarry at its Leazonia based operation to become a leading supplier of quality sand, stone and base course material in the Johannesburg market.

To support this a fleet of 35 tipper trucks owned and operated by Gomes Sand is used to supply material to the market.
