Plaster Sand
Our plaster sand is produced from drilled and blasted material mined at our quarry. This rock is further crushed down to <1.2mm to produce a manufactured sand.
The <1.2mm manufactured sand is then washed in a state-of-the-art washing plant to reduce the silt content (<75μm) in the sand, which produces a “washed plaster sand”.
This ensures that only the highest quality sand is used to supply our clients.
The reduced fines content in the washed plaster sand will allow for a higher quality plaster finish to be produced.
Our washed plaster sand can be used in a variety of places such as:
- Plastering over brick work, both interior and exterior.
- Grouting in paving works.
- Filler sand in ready-mix concrete applications.
Our washed plaster sand is suitable for both small scale and high spec construction projects.

Description
How Plaster Sand is made:
Gomes washed plaster sand is produced from solid granite rock that is drilled and blasted to loosen it up and fragment it into a manageable size. The layer of material mined ranges from 8-25m deep below the surface, which provides for the high strength manufactured sand. Once drilled and blasted the solid rock is now fragmented into particle sizes of 500mm and smaller. The material is then loaded and hauled to a crushing plant where the rock is further crushed and sized using a series of crushers, screens and washing equipment to produce a final product size of <1.2mm.
Benefits of using a washed plaster sand versus an unwashed plaster sand:
- Washed plaster sand has a reduced silt/clay content (<75μm), this will prevent shrinkage cracks in the plaster work.
- Washed plaster sand with a reduced clay content will have a higher strength when compared to unwashed plaster sand.
- Washing plaster sand will remove any organic matter in the sand, which provides for a higher quality finish when floating the plaster work. Hence if plaster sand is not washed organic matter such as fine roots from grass will be present in the material.
- Manufactured washed plaster sand provides for a consistent sand quality, which will allow for consistency in the final plaster work product throughout the construction site.
